{"id":25,"date":"2016-10-17T14:05:42","date_gmt":"2016-10-17T14:05:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/web.education.wisc.edu\/lambda\/?page_id=25"},"modified":"2024-12-06T20:54:52","modified_gmt":"2024-12-06T20:54:52","slug":"about-us","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/web.education.wisc.edu\/lambda\/","title":{"rendered":"Home page"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Welcome to the LAMBDA Website<\/h2>\r\n<p>Welcome to our new project website for the Longitudinal Analysis of Mathematical Brain Development and Abilities study. \u00a0This is a joint project between the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/web.education.wisc.edu\/edneurolab\/\">Educational Neuroscience Lab<\/a><\/span>\u00a0and the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/web.education.wisc.edu\/pmatthews\/\">MELD Lab<\/a><\/span>. \u00a0We&#8217;re currently in Year 3 of the study and are excited to have you as part of our community!<\/p>\r\n<hr \/>\r\n<p>Our\u00a0projects examine a number of questions about fractions, including:<\/p>\r\n<p><em>Why are fractions so hard to learn?<\/em><br \/><em>What brain systems might support fraction learning? \u00a0<\/em><br \/><em>How do these systems develop in schoolchildren?<\/em><\/p>\r\n<p>The Longitudinal Analysis of Mathematical Brain Development and Abilities (LAMBDA)\u00a0Learning Community is\u00a0investigating the development of fraction knowledge in children. Knowledge of fractions and m<span id=\"x_docs-internal-guid-9768a692-b4f0-e4f1-9ba0-ad0b0c2080fd\">athematical competence are important determinants of life chances in modern society\u00a0and are even <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">known to impact educational, employment, and\u00a0health outcomes<\/span>. Despite the importance of fraction knowledge, children and adults often encounter considerable difficulties understanding fractions.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span id=\"x_docs-internal-guid-9768a692-b4f1-aff0-d661-6e09d37bdf70\">To better understand how basic perceptual abilities rooted in the human brain support the learning and use of fractions, we\u00a0are<\/span> following children from 2nd to 5th, and 5th to 8th, grade in a four-year longitudinal study. Children come in to our lab 2-3 times\/year and complete a variety of tasks and standardized tests, most of which assess their reading, math, and spatial skills as well as other &#8220;higher end&#8221; cognitive functions, like memory and attention. Additionally, some kids participate in a (functional) MRI scan each year.<\/p>\r\n<p>As part of the LAMBDA Learning Community\u00a0participants will:<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Get their brain scanned by an <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/web.education.wisc.edu\/lambda\/index.php\/brain-imaging\/\">fMRI machine<\/a><\/span>! (see the &#8220;Brain Imaging&#8221; page for more info)<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Fill out computer surveys and questionnaires!<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Contribute to important research questions!<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Receive semi-annual e-Newsletters and updates!<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Attend family fun events with other participating families!<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\r\n<p>The results of this study may\u00a0provide new insights into <span id=\"x_docs-internal-guid-9768a692-b4f1-eb81-eb73-c0e78de25ca2\">1) the nature of human number processing, <\/span><span id=\"x_docs-internal-guid-9768a692-b4f1-eb81-eb73-c0e78de25ca2\">2) the mechanisms by which fractions instruction has its effects, and\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"x_docs-internal-guid-9768a692-b4f1-eb81-eb73-c0e78de25ca2\">3) key individual differences that can help deepen our understanding of math learning difficulties and the potential for their remediation. <\/span><span id=\"x_docs-internal-guid-9768a692-b4f1-eb81-eb73-c0e78de25ca2\">By better understanding the origins of difficulties with fractions, we aim to improve math skills and life outcomes that depend on fractions understanding.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\r\n\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Welcome to the LAMBDA Website Welcome to our new project website for the Longitudinal Analysis of Mathematical Brain Development and Abilities study. \u00a0This is a joint project between the Educational Neuroscience Lab\u00a0and the MELD Lab. \u00a0We&#8217;re currently in Year 3 of the study and are excited to have you as part of our community!
